A demonstration marched today after the Friday prayer carrying Palestinian flags and banners calling to end the Israeli occupation, stop the wall and settlement building, stop land confiscation and settler attacks, closures and roadblocks, and the release of all detainees. The demonstration was joined by internationals and Israeli activists.

Our commitment is to the dismantling of Israeli apartheid, the return of Palestinian refugees, and the ending of the Israeli colonization of historic Palestine.

[The Magnes Zionist] How many times have you heard this line: Look, I admit that there are problems with Israeli democracy, e.g., its treatment of its Arab citizens, and the Occupation. But the country is still at war with the Arabs, and in time, things will improve. After all, once the Arab citizens were under a military government. Now, at least de jure, they are equal citizens. Any restriction of civil liberties are temporary measures. As for the Occupation, when peace comes, it will cease to exist. And in the meantime, the Israeli judiciary is there to protect civil liberties.

Rani Bornat is representative of many rural Palestinians, one of ten children born to a shepherd in the village of Bil’in. Educated in an industrial school, he excelled in electronics. After secondary school, he applied for further studies at university but was not accepted. Instead he went to work in Israel. Before the Second Intifada, his dreams were to get married, build his own house and own a car. But after September 2000, his life changed.
