Bil'in Model of Wall Resistance

[Palestine Think Tank] In April 2004 the Israeli government announced its intention to build the Separation Wall on even more land from the village of Bil’in. Quickly, the villager formed the Popular Committee Against the Wall and its Settlements (PCAWS).

The PCAWS coordinates with lawyers and legal advisers in order to represent citizens of Bil’in whose land was stolen for the development of illegal settlements or the construction of the Separation Wall. This committee prepares daily and weekly activities, organizing with support by international and Israeli activists.

[Tadamon] For over five years the Palestinian village of Bil’in has sustained a grassroots struggle for land and livelihood. Every Friday, Palestinian villagers brave a volley of sound grenades, tear gas canisters and rubber-coated steel bullets to stage demonstrations against the apartheid wall and the construction of Israeli settlements on Palestinian agricultural lands.

In many ways, Bil’in’s creative tactics have captured the imaginations of thousands of people both in Quebec and around the world, and have inspired other Palestinian villages across the West Bank. Resistance remains ongoing despite considerable repression on the part of Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF).

IDF still using banned weapon against civilian protestors

[Ha’aretz] The Israel Defense Forces continues using the Ruger 10/22 rifle to disperse protests even though it has been prohibited by the military advocate general, a hearing at a military court revealed last week. A brigade’s former operations officer told the court he wasn’t even aware of the prohibition.

Military Prosecution Demands More Than Two Years Imprisonment for Bil'in's Abdallah Abu Rahmah

The sentencing phase in the trial of Abdallah Abu Rahmah, the coordinator of the Bil’in Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements, began yesterday at the Ofer Military Court. Abu Rahmah was convicted of organizing illegal marches and of incitement last month, but cleared of the violence charges he was indicted for - stone-throwing and a vindictive arms-possession charge for collecting used tear-gas projectiles and displaying them.


The International League for Human Rights protests against this unsubstantiated conviction and demands the immediate release of Abdallah Abu Rahma

[International League for Human Rights] On September 15, an Israeli military court will announce the sentence to be passed on Abdallah Abu Rahma, the well-known coordinator of nonviolent protest against the settlement and wall con-struction policies in the village of Bil’in (Palestine). Abu Rahma, recipient of the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Medal for civil courage and extraordinary service in the cause of human rights, has been sitting behind bars for nine months. On August 24th of this year he was convicted of "inciting" as well as the "organization and participation in illegal protests." He is facing a sentence of many years in prison. Abdallah Abu Rahma was convicted on the basis of confessions coerced from under-aged minors who were taken from their beds at night, arrested and immediately interrogated. The prose-cution was not able to present any other evidence.
