Bil'in: 3 child prisoners released, more injuries in weekly protest

photo [Stop the Wall] During the repression by Israeli Occupation Forces of the weekly protest against the Wall and Settlements in the village of Bil’inan international solidarity activist was injured and dozens of people had difficulty breathing as a result of inhaling tear gas. The demonstration included international solidarity activists.

Prior to the protest, delegations from Italy and Spain met with members of the Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements in Bil’in. They listened to a detailed explanation by the Popular Committee of the experience of Bil’in’s popular resistance during the last five and a half years, its achievements and the effective role that international solidarity plays in the popular resistance in Bil’in.


Palestinian villagers lose Montreal firms appeal

[CBC News] Quebec’s Court of Appeal has upheld a ruling that Palestinian villagers trying to sue two Montreal companies operating on the West Bank need to go through Israel’s legal system.

The West Bank village of Bil’in is disputing the companies’ condominium development, alleging they violated international law by building Israeli settlements on occupied territory.

The claim was filed against sister companies Green Park International and Green Mount International, which built on land that was part of a Palestinian village until Israel took the West Bank from Jordanian control in the Six Day War in 1967.

Military Police to investigate killing of Bil'in demonstrator from firing of tear-gas canister 15 months ago

[B’Tselem] Three videos prove the canister was fired directly at Bassem Abu-Rahmeh, but the army ordered the investigation only after threat of High Court petition

The Judge Advocate General (JAG), Maj.-Gen. Avichai Mandelblit, ordered the Military Police Investigation Unit to investigate the circumstances of the killing of Bassem Abu-Rahmeh, from the West Bank village of Bil’in , who was killed when a high-velocity tear-gas canister struck him during an anti-barrier demonstration in the village on 17 April 2009. Until today, the JAG’s Office refused to order a criminal investigation into the incident. The JAG announced the change in his position in a letter to the Abu-Rahmeh family’s attorney, Michael Sfard, who had threatened to petition the High Court of Justice, and after receiving the findings of forensic special imaging experts, proving that the canisters were fired directly at the protester in violation of the open-fire regulations.

IDF to probe death of Palestinian protester at West Bank rally

[Ha’aretz] The Military Advocate General on Monday ordered the army’s criminal investigations unit to investigate the death of a Palestinian protester who was killed by a tear gas canister at a demonstration in Bil’in in April 2009.

The Military Advocate General had refused to open a criminal investigation into the death of Bassem Abu-Rahma, but on Monday changed its mind after expert testimony showed that the tear gas canister was aimed directly at Abu-Rahma and was fired in violation of military orders.
