On Friday, villagers from Bil’in, located near the central West Bank city of Ramallah, marched in their weekly nonviolent protest against the illegal Israeli wall built on the village’s land. They were supported by international and Israeli peace activists.
Protesters carried banners demanding the removal of the Israeli wall and settlements and calling upon the international community to help Palestinians retain Jerusalem. They demanded that the Israeli army stop killing Palestinian civilians and an end to the use of live ammunition against Palestinian civilian protestors.

The Second Intifada is over and Palestinian politics are desperately polarized, but as Gaza grips the headlines it is important to remember that Qassam rocket fire is not the only contemporary expression of Palestinian resistance.
As the construction of Israel’s separation wall nears completion, I travel with a group of young activists from Ramallah to Ni’lin, a small Palestinian village about to be cut off from its land as the wall snakes further and further through its fields.
In these dry rocky hills dotted with olive trees, a popular movement is underway.

In recent protests against the Wall in the villages of Bil’in and Ni’lin, Israeli Occupation Forces have stepped up the use of violence against peaceful protests in the unveiling of a new tear gas weapon.
Three weeks ago, Israel first used a battery that is capable of launching 30 tear gas canisters at one time, an amount that covers the entire hillside of Ni’lin in the agent. Along with the copious amounts of gas, Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition and rubber bullets into the crowd of peaceful demonstrators, injuring 17 Palestinians and 1 international.

Protesters carried banners demanding the removal of the Israeli wall and settlements and calling upon the international community to help Palestinians retain Jerusalem. Protestors also carried photos of Ibrahim Burnat who was injured during last week’s protest by three live bullets fired by an Israeli soldier at a close range. Burnat is still receiving treatment in the hospital.

A senior advisor to UNICEF’s Director said in a letter today that UNICEF will reject all partnerships with, or financial support from, Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev. Leviev had previously provided UNICEF with support by sponsoring fundraising events in France. Leviev’s past support for UNICEF is featured in a number of places on his company’s website.
