UNICEF Rejects Support From Israeli Billionaire Known for Constructing Settlements on Palestinian Lands

A senior advisor to UNICEF’s Director said in a letter today that UNICEF will reject all partnerships with, or financial support from, Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev. Leviev had previously provided UNICEF with support by sponsoring fundraising events in France. Leviev’s past support for UNICEF is featured in a number of places on his company’s website.

A Border Police officer was charged with destroying a police videotape showing him beating a demonstrator

A Border Police officer was charged yesterday by the internal Police Investigations Department with destroying a police videotape showing him beating a demonstrator near the West Bank village of Bil’in in March 2006. Yair Nuri, 40, was then a team commander in a Judea and Samaria District Border Police patrol unit. During an unlawful demonstration against the separation fence, he instructed three officers to arrest a man attempting to tear down the fence. They kicked, dragged and injured him, while a fourth officer captured the events with a police video camera. According to the charge sheet, Nuri ordered one of his officers to tape over it inside their police vehicle, so that he could claim it was erased accidentally. Nuri is charged with forgery in aggravated circumstances, destruction of evidence, obstruction of justice and tampering with an investigation.

Solidarity With Bil’in: Between Football Games And Tear Gas

Hundreds of demonstrators, both Palestinian and international, gathered in Bi’lin on Friday to peacefully protest the construction of the Apartheid Wall and the confiscation of Palestinian lands.

The day began with a football game in an olive grove on a hill in Bi’lin just outside an Israeli settlement, a form of peaceful protest adopted by citizens of Bi’lin. The game came to a screeching halt however, when Israeli forces fired tear gas onto the makeshift field. Players and spectators scattered, seeking refuge in the town. Medical personal administered oxygen and handed out alcohol to those affected by the gas.

The vice president of the European parliament, an Italian judge and a Northern Irish Nobel Peace prize laureate were among the five people injured at Friday’s weekly demonstration in Bil’in against the separation fence.
