01/04/2010

[Haaretz] A year after activist Bassem Abu Rahmeh was killed by a tear gas grenade in a protest near the village of Bil’in, the military prosecution decided it would not investigate his death.

[United Nations] VIENNA, 26 March — Representatives of non-governmental organizations, activists and others attending today’s United Nations Meeting of Civil Society in Support of the Palestinian People in Vienna reported on actions taken against the wall built by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and especially around the village of Bil’in, highlighting the importance of the July 2004 advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice regarding the wall.

Otherwise Occupied / Why the phone could not ring

[Ha’aretz] Adib Abu Rahma, 39, was arrested 255 days ago. He is a resident of the village of Bil’in, a taxi driver and father of nine; his eldest daughter is studying medicine at Al-Quds University.

The military tribunal has already held eight or nine hearings in his case since his arrest in July 2009, on the basis of the testimony of four minors from Bil’in (even though many of the "facts" they told the police were subsequently proven false). He is accused of incitement, disturbing the peace and entering a closed military zone. Sure, 255 days have passed, but the military’s judicial and detention system has plenty of time. The hearings have ended and the judge, Aryeh Dorani, has to set a date for the summation.

Israel wants to push Palestinians back into cycle of violence

22/03/2010

[Ha’aretz] Israel has been waging a bitter battle in recent months against human rights activists and the non-violent struggle by Jews and Arabs against the occupation. To this end, the state has made use of the most questionable means available to it.

They are attacking on all fronts, and it is hard to believe that their actions do not represent official policy. As such, without the citizens noticing it, Israeli democracy is once again heading in the direction of the "democracies" of Russia and Egypt.

Who's in favor of a Palestinian intifada ?

21/03/2010

[Ha’aretz] How can you find out if someone is a leftist? You ask him whether he thinks an intifada will take place. If he responds, "Yes, no doubt. Pretty soon," we have a dangerous leftist. If he responds, "That’s silly, a few riots and a Qassam rocket are not an intifada," we have a proud Jew who believes that the Arabs have already learned their lesson. This is one of the new characteristics of the left-right clash, but not of the real danger that lurks behind the Temple Mount’s thick walls, or beyond the fence surrounding the Gaza Strip.
