Israel's settlers: One reason for the absence of peace

TWO months ago Heftsiba, an Israeli construction firm, went bust. One reason for its woes was a court order last year to freeze work on a big housing project on an Israeli settlement just inside the West Bank. The land, it turned out, had in effect been stolen from private owners in a neighbouring Palestinian village, Bilin. Yet after the bankruptcy, the same court ruled that the apartment blocks—and their prospective buyers, who had broken in and occupied them at the news of Heftsiba’s impending collapse—could stay.

Israel quadruples building permits in West Bank: report

Israel’s Lands Authority issued permits for the construction of 6,100 new apartments in the West Bank in the first three quarters of 2007, some four times as many as during the same period in previous years, Israel Radio reported Wednesday. Most of the apartments are being built in the Jewish settlement of Modi’in Ilit, near Jerusalem - one of the main settlement blocs Israel wants to keep as part of a future peace deal with the Palestinians.

This is what it feels like when one is trying to understand the Middle East peace process that never seems to lead to anything. Observing this never ending saga, one can hardly help reaching the realization that peace is not a priority for Israel, and indeed Israeli governments have made no secret of the fact that a peace that precludes Israel’s complete control over historic Palestine is of no interest to them.
