Border Control / The last legal loophole

The realization slowly began to dawn on Dror Etkes when the Civil Administration notified him that its inspectors had issued demolition orders for the structures built by Amona settlers in 1997 next to Ofra, on private Palestinian land. It turned out that the inspectors had confiscated several construction tools from the settlers. It all became clearer still when Etkes was informed that the inspectors had confiscated a container in Modi’in Illit, while bulldozers were working feverishly on private land belonging to the residents of the nearby Palestinian town of Bil’in, preparing to transform the land into a park for Modi’in Illit’s large ultra-Orthodox community.

The villagers were joined by international and Israeli supporters. The protest headed towards the location of the Wall shortly after Friday prayers. A large Israeli force erected a barricade to block the demonstration from reaching the wall.

Upon reaching the barricade, Israeli soldiers opened fire randomly on the protestors and showered them with tear gas, injuring seven of the demonstrators.

SAMWU First Vice President detained, strip searched by Israeli security

The First Vice-President of SAMWU, Mr Xolile Nxu, was detained, interrogated and strip searched by Israeli security en route to the Second Annual Conference on Popular Non-Violent Resistance held recently in the West Bank village of Bil’in, Occupied Palestine. The conference was attended by 400 people from across the world, including EU Parliamentarian, Luisa Morgantini. Mr Nxu spoke on South African resistance to Apartheid, and also held discussions with Palestinians about the need for a One State solution to the current occupation.

Ayman Rabi, Executive Director of PHG, explained during the Consul’s visit that restrictions on drilling wells is only a part of the tangled problem of water access in the occupied territories. After leaving downtown Ramallah, the first stop on the Consul’s tour was a point at the illegal Israeli separation fence in Bil’in.

CNN in Bilin: Blames the Victim

In a report airing this morning on CNN, reporter Cal Perry produced a story on the weekly demonstrations in the Palestinian village of Bilin. The demonstrations include large numbers of villagers from Bilin and internationals (including Israelis), who make a statement against Israel’s so called “security fence” which Israel is building on Palestinian land.
