It is the same chant, "No to the wall!" repeated every week that has put this tiny West Bank village on the world map. Bil’in, population 1,600, marked the second anniversary of protests against the Israeli barrier February 23. Now running at 100 demonstrations, this joint campaign of Palestinians standing alongside Israelis is the best-publicized challenge to what is known as the "security fence" or the "apartheid wall" - depending, of course, on whom you ask.

Defense Ministry officials denied Sunday that Defense Minister Amir Peretz was asked to involve himself in the decision by the Supreme Planning Council for Judea and Samaria to legalize the construction of the Matityahu East neighborhood of the settlement of Modi’in Illit.

Hundreds of Palestinians and Israelis took part Friday in a demonstration marking two years since the beginning of protests against the building of the separation fence at Bil’in. Sixteen demonstrators were injured in clashes with security forces. Four were treated at the hospital and released.

The Supreme Planning Council for Judea and Samaria recently legalized the largest-ever illegal construction project in the West Bank. Part of the project is situated on private land, which belongs to Palestinian residents of the village of Bil’in.

Israeli sources reported on Saturday night after midnight that the so-called Supreme Planning Council for settlements in the occupied West Bank, legalized recently what was described as the “largest-ever” illegal settlement construction on lands which belongs to residents of Bil’in village, near Ramallah in the northern part of the West Bank.
