Mr. Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative, visited the village of Bil’in in which he met with several members of the village council and members of the People’s Committee. He also met with Mohammed Abu Rahme member of Bil’in Village Council who welcomed the guest and his accompanying delegation. He praised his role in this visit to the village and to support the ongoing struggles in the face of the wall and the settlements.
Gandhi and Dr. Barghouthi listened to a detailed explanation of Mohammed Khatib, a member of the Popular Committee of Bil’in and the experience of peaceful popular resistance in the past five years and the creative ways in the struggle. He also discussed the achievements of the People’s Committee and the role of effective international solidarity in the popular resistance in Bil’in.
Gandhi said that "I salute and bless the people of Bil’in and their struggle and steadfastness of the popular contemporary to the occupation, and that news of Bil’in and their activities are known all over the world, and that what is happening is a form of popular mass struggle today, and for the settlements and the wall, that one day the Israelis will see that it be destroyed as a result of persecution and oppression against the Palestinians."
He also said that "It is our duty to awaken the international community from its sleep and make them aware of what is happening in Palestine and that he will contribute to awaken the world to support the Palestinian people in their just cause."
Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi said that the visit of Gandhi and the symbolism represented by a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi who led India’s struggle for liberation from colonialism and racial discrimination and access to independence, to see a particular struggle of the Palestinian people and see the suffering of our people in the rest of the Occupied Palestinian attacks daily extremist settlers and the occupation forces is a significant achievement.
The People’s Committee introduced a short film on the personality of Mahatma Gandhi in the popular struggle four weeks in the weekly events during the clashes on the wall, and expressed his admiration for this great innovation featured in the popular struggle.
The Bil’in Popular Committee Against the Wall thanked Gandhi and the group who accompanied him. They praised his efforts, support, and solidarity with the Bil’in in and the Palestinian people which left great impact in their hearts.
