Israeli soldiers invade Bil'in village again

19/07/2009

As dawn broke at 5:00 am on Sunday, 19 July, five Israeli jeeps invaded the village of Bi’lin and arrested one of its local leaders.

The soldiers surrounded the home of Imad Burnat, 37, pulling him from his home in front of his wife and four children, arrested him, and pushed him into one of their vehicles. Imad was one of the members and the cameraman of Bi’lin’s “Popular Committee” an organization protesting the location of Israel’s ‘Apartheid’ Wall at the edge of its town.

Over a dozen Palestinian and international supporters surrounded the jeeps and tried to block their leaving. Soldiers threw numerous sound grenades and tear gas canisters to disperse the peace protesters and managed to escape. The soldiers attempted to arrest another committee member and international supporter, who managed to escape by outrunning their pursuers.

In the past month, the frequent night invasions have resulted in 17 villagers being arrested, along with one Israeli peace activist and an American international supporter.
