100’s of Palestinian, international and Israeli activists marched for yet another demonstration against the apartheid wall which has annexed over 50% of the village of Bil’in.
For this week’s demonstration, the popular committee of the village decided to surprise the soldiers and arrive from another point. As the demonstrators marched, they noticed the soldiers were waiting on the other side of the valley, at the usual spot. In order to try and reach the wall before the soldiers, the protesters ran towards the wall - as did the soldiers. Within a few minutes, the protesters found themselves in a cloud of tear gas and smoke… The hot tear gas canisters, once they hit the dry ground, ignited the fields and some olive trees! The villagers rushed towards the burning field and olive trees to try to put out the fire - but were immediately confronted with a wall of tear gas and rubber bullets.
Three injuries were reported: two activists suffered from severe tear gas inhalation, a member of the popular committee of the village suffered from burns on his hands from a tear gas canister hitting his hand… And at least five olive trees were burnt down.
