Israeli Activist Arrested in Bil’in as Residents Commemorate Land Day

The weekly protest in Bil’in this week was held in commemoration of Palestinian Land Day. The crowd headed out after the Friday prayer to protest the wall and settlements, despite military orders two weeks ago declaring the village a closed military zone. The protest was joined by Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, the head of the Palestinian National Initiative, along with international and Israeli activists.

Trial of human rights defender Mr Abdallah Abu Rahma

[The Right to Stop the Wall] The next hearing in the trial of human rights defender Mr Abdallah Abu Rahma will take place on 24 March 2010 in Ofer, Nothern Israel. Abdallah Abu Rahma is a secondary school teacher and the head of the Bil’in Popular Committee against the Wall, which carries out activities in protest against the wall constructed by the Israeli authorities and which Abdallah Abu Rahma insists violates the economic, social and cultural rights of the Palestinian people. Abdallah Abu Rahma has been in Israeli detention in Ofer Prison since his arrest on 10 December 2009. The Bil’in Popular Committee Against the Wall was awarded the International League for Human Right’s Carl Von Ossietzky Medal in 2008 for its work in defence of human rights.

People of Bil’in defy the « closed military zone » order

Dozens of demonstrators were injured today in the weekly anti-wall march at Bil’in. A number suffered from suffocation caused by the use of tear gas due to clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and international peace activists on one side, and Israel Occupation forces on the other. This is the result of suppression of the last of the weekly marches against the wall and settlement.

Israel Bans International Activists from West Bank Village of Bil'in, Cracks Down on Non-Violent Protests

[IPSC] Bil’in village, the internationally renowned centre of Palestinian non-violent resistance to Israel’s Apartheid Wall, was this morning - 15th March 2010 - declared a ‘Closed Military Zone’ by Israeli Authorities, meaning that access for International and Israeli anti-Wall activists is outlawed for six months. Furthermore, the head of the Popular Committee in Bil’in, Iyad Burnat, received a phone call from the Shin Bet - Israel’s ‘internal security service’ - ordering him to report to Ofer Military Prison for questioning.

This week’s demonstration was part of the National Culture Week for Jerusalem and was joined by international and Israeli activists. The protest was organized by the Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements in Bil’in and was joined by the Minister of Culture, Siham Barghothi, and members of the Democratic Youth Union , Fida’.
