Bil’in: an appointment with tear gas

A day in Bil’in, my third. Distinguishing this day was the presence of about 10 French members of the European Parliament, in the region for some sort of mission, and tear gas, clouds and clouds of it, some claimed stronger than usual. I was gassed repeatedly, at one point nearly incapacitated, difficult to see and breathe, coughing, spitting, weakened. This occurred when the marchers, about 100 of us, roughly half local and half international were some 1/2 km from the Fence—the only females were one young village girl with her father in the front line and some internationals. (One other minor distinguishing feature: my new telephoto lens. Using it for the first time, experimenting with it, I discovered the world glows differently thru it.)

Today saw a large demonstration in Bil’in against the apartheid wall attended by members of the French Parliament. 200 Palestinian, Israeli and international demonstrators marched from the village down to the apartheid wall, where the procession was met by the Israeli army.

Tomorrow 36 members of the French Parliament and regional mayors will join the people of Bil’in for their weekly protest against the apartheid wall and settlements. Palestinian, Israeli and international protestors will meet at 12pm by the mosque in Bil’in village to march to a site near the Modi’in Illit settlement.

In Friday Israelis of the anarchists against the wall initiative joined grass roots Palestinian activists in three demonstrations. First the nearly legendary demonstration in Bil’in - the 142nd since February 2005. As usual, the Israeli state force prevented the nonviolent demonstrations from even reaching the gate to the West of the separation fence. As usual, the showered the people with tear gas when the first few persons crossed a line two hundreds meters from the gate.
