Criminalization of peaceful protest continues: more arrests at weekly demonstrations

The weekly demonstration in the village of Bil’in this week saw protesters draw attention to the recently published photos of the abuse of Palestinian prisoners by the Israeli army. A handful of the protesters blindfolded and handcuffed themselves to draw attention to the mistreatment of prisoners and marched at the front of the demonstration. Two arrests were made, including one of these protesters, a Norwegian student, who was grabbed while still blindfolded and dragged away.

Bil’in: 3 injured in weekly protest held in defense of Jerusalem

photo Today three protesters were injured and dozens suffered from breathing problems after inhaling tear gas during the clashes in the village of Bil’in. The clashes erupted as the Israeli occupation violently responded to the village’s weekly protest against the Apartheid Wall and settlements.

A delegation of participants in the 17th International Festival of Farkha, composed of youth from the West Bank and Palestine ‘48, joined the residents of Bil’in in the demonstration, which was organized by the Popular Committee against Wall and the settlements. Numerous youth from the development association ash-Sharaka, based in Morocco and the West Bank, as well as dozens of international supporters, also participated in the protest.


Mohammed Khatib of Bil'in's Popular Committee Prevented from Going Abroad Despite an OK from Court

The Shin Bet prevented Mohammed Khatib of the Bil’in Popular Committee to cross the Allenby Bridge on his way to Spain today. Khatib was banned despite having a permit to leave the country from the Military court.

Israeli soldiers detain former European Parliament Vice President in Bil’in

photo Israeli soldiers detained the former Vice President of the European Parliament, Luisa Morgantini, in Bil’in this afternoon, injured one Israeli activist and arrested another.

Sixty nine-year-old Morgantini, an Italian Member of the Euopean Parliament (MEP) has long been an outspoken supporter of Palestinians. She has participated several times in demonstrations in Bil’in and in June 2008 was injured when Israeli soldiers attacked a group of non-violent activists.
